As The Silos crumbled, I started playing some live shows with Freedy Johnston. It was a good time to live in the Hoboken, N.J. area. There were gigs at Maxwell’s and The Beaten Path. There were saving periods at Water Audio on Grand Street and rehearsals on second Street briansclub.
To this day, I could scent meats broiling from Arthur’s kitchen downtown. Maxwell Home had a espresso manufacturer uptown on 11th Street and Lake Road. The scent of roasting coffee beans permeated every inch of the distance sq town.
Another heroes will be Mark Zoltak, Bob Rupe, Kevin Salem, Marshall Crenshaw, Jimmy Lee, Jared Nickerson and Graham Maby. Freedy’s project couldn’t attended at an improved time. I was moving from the using ship which was The Silos to a far more promising Freedy Johnston. On top of that, I was still working together with the “crew.” Once more, I was lucky. It wouldn’t be a long time before this case fell apart.
I met Freedy Johnston when he was the starting act on The Silos Chicken tour. He exposed for all of us on a number of days in the Northeast, promoting his first history, The Trouble Tree. He was a wiry, uncomfortable man from Kansas. His music was a mixture of Place, Indie and Redneck.
More than performing, he’d a loony container vocal type of screeching through his songs. He consciously trained that vocal type by the time Bad Reputation was recorded. For me that “improvement” was a blunder and maybe not consultant of the Freedy I when knew. “Get your feet from my dashboard.
